The DHS has said that the use of phone numbers that charge the public or patients a premium rate to contact the NHS are to be banned in England. Focus on the Dispensing Doctors Fee Scale from 1 October 2009 - 16 Oct 2009

The General Practitioners Committee (GPC) and NHS Employers and have agreed a new fee scale for dispensing doctors, which will begin on 1 October 2009. From 1 October the fee scale for dispensing doctors will be lowered by 8.7 per cent for the remaining six months of the financial year, representing a 4.9 per cent decrease across the whole year. From 1 April 2010 there will be an increase to produce a figure that is appropriate for the full new financial year. - click here for more details

Scam Alert - - 16 Oct 2009

Over the past year or so various LMCs have issued warnings about companies like Novachannel which send communications to UK practices about publications like "Med1web" and “Physicians and Therapists Guide”. Novachannel operated in Switzerland and the Swiss Federal Data Protection Act has granted every individual the right to have their details removed from private databases. The scheme has now moved to United Directorios in Portugal which is demanding payments for "advertisements". We urge practices to be extremely suspicious of unsolicited offers to include practice information in medical directories. Beware Physicians Therapists Guide The GPC has received a number of letters and emails recently in relation to the NovaAG company, which is sending communications to UK practices (usually addressed to individual GPs) about their publication 'Physicians Therapists Guide'. We believe there are other similar companies offering the same sort of thing. The Physicians Therapists Guide letter states: 'Your data has not been checked in the last 7 months. Without your verification, we cannot guarantee that the information in your entry is up to date”=2 0 and they include an SAE for an address in20Lisbon, Portugal. In the small print at the bottom of the form, it makes clear that in returning the form you are signing up to pay for what is essentially an advertisement in this publication. Some practices have returned the form without noticing this, and have subsequently been invoiced for the cost of nearly £1,000. When practices have tried to get out of this, the company has insisted that they have made a legal commitment and are obliged to pay. - click here for more details

Health professionals often receive requests from people who wish to view or obtain copies of their own health records or those of others. Sometimes these requests come directly from the patient and at other times the requests may be from third parties such as solicitors. Health professionals may also receive requests for access to the records of deceased patients. The purpose of this guidance is to set out the circumstances in which health professionals may receive, and respond to, requests for access to health records. DVLA - Consent for the Release of Relevant Medical Information for Patients - 18 Aug 2009

From 17th August, new rules called Consent by Assurance are being implemented by the DVLA relating to the release of relevant medical information for patients applying for driving licences. The BMA has given agreement that DVLA no longer need to provide the patients written consent from the patient for access to the relevant parts of their records for the purposes of being granted a driving licence. Increasing List Size - Financial Implications. - 13 Mar 2006

This guidance is designed to advise practices facing the possibility of a large increase in list size. New Guidance on Managing Dental presentations - 22 Dec 2005

Before refusing to treat a patient asking for emergency dental treatment, a GP must ascertain that the condition requires only dental treatment. Jury Service - Do GPs have to turn up ? - 22 Dec 2005

New GPC guidance on Hepatitis B jabs - 10 Sep 2005

In the absence of clear guidance from the centre, Norfolk LMC has always been cautious when advising about GPs' responsibilities for prescribing and monitoring Hepatitis B immunisation for occupational health purposes. We are delighted to say that the BMA has now committed itself and that at long last we have central guidance for the profession. The guidance is more radical than the LMC officers expected but has been through the GPC and its lawyers so should be definitive; we suggest you read it very carefully. In essence it looks as though practices should no longer feel that they have to carry out this immunisation for occupational health purposes. The guidance includes a helpful template letter for patients who request > Hep B vaccination - with luck this will stop them getting through to GPs and practice nurses - who find it very hard to say "no" - click here for more details

Pensionable Earnings - Accountancy issues - 05 Aug 2005

This guidance has been prepared on behalf of the BMA’s Pensions Department and the General Practitioners Committee by Kingston Smith, Chartered Accountants, in response to common queries received from GPs and their accountants on the new arrangements for assessing GP pensionable earnings. It is intended primarily for GPs’ accountants for them then to discuss the arrangements with their GP clients. STATEMENT ON PMS UPLIFT FOR 2005/06 - 01 Apr 2005

Certain payments to PMS practices that are covered by legislation have been uplifted by 3.225% in line with the same items in the GMS Statement of Financial Entitlements.
